I've been having issues with my startup drive, so last weekend I finally just erased it and started over. It was literally a plug-and-play set up-when I plugged it in, my MacBook immediately recognized the monitor, and I was able to arrange the desktops the way I wanted and get back to work. I use my MacBook for work, so I set up an extended desktop (using a ViewSonic monitor) about six months ago without any problems. I've been running High Sierra (most recently 10.13.3) on my MacBook Air (late-2012 model) since it was released.
